Piccolo Oboe/Oboe Musette

The piccolo oboe, also called the oboe musette, is a small oboe pitched higher than the standard instrument, typically in E-flat or F, used to extend the oboe family's range upward. It appears occasionally in orchestral and chamber literature calling for a brighter, higher timbre than a standard oboe can produce. It is a rare instrument played mainly by oboists specializing in unusual repertoire.
