Piccolo Cello

The piccolo cello is a smaller-bodied cello, sometimes strung with a fifth string above the standard C-G-D-A tuning, giving it easier access to a higher register than a standard cello. Bach is thought to have used it (or a related instrument) for virtuosic upper-register passages in some of his cello suites and cantatas. Today it is played mainly by specialists in historically informed Baroque performance.
