Piccolo

The piccolo is a small transverse flute pitched an octave above the standard concert flute, usually made of wood, metal, or plastic. It is used in orchestras, concert bands, and marching bands to add a bright, piercing top voice, notably in works such as Sousa's marches and Tchaikovsky's symphonies. Its compact size and high register let it cut through the sound of a full ensemble.
