Piccolo Violino

The piccolo violino, or violino piccolo, is a small violin tuned a minor third or so above the standard violin, historically used in Baroque ensembles, including a famous obbligato part in Bach's First Brandenburg Concerto. It largely fell out of use as orchestral tuning and instrument-making standardized, surviving today mainly in historically informed performance. Its smaller body and higher tuning gave Baroque composers an especially bright, soprano-like string voice.
