Contrabass Oboe

The contrabass oboe is an extremely rare double-reed instrument pitched two octaves below the standard oboe, with long, often looped metal tubing and a large bell to project its deep tone. It is used sparingly in orchestral and contemporary classical works calling for unusual low double-reed color, and few instruments or players exist worldwide. Its rarity makes it something of a novelty and specialist's instrument even within professional oboe circles.
