Piccolo Clarinet

The piccolo clarinet is the smallest and highest-pitched member of the clarinet family, most often built in A-flat, sounding well above the standard B-flat clarinet. It is used chiefly in wind bands and orchestral works, especially in some European (notably Italian) band traditions, to add a shrill top voice above the regular clarinet section. Because of its rarity and demanding upper range, it is typically played only by specialist clarinetists.
