Cello (Violoncello)

The cello, formally the violoncello, is a large bowed string instrument in the violin family, tuned in fifths (C-G-D-A) and pitched roughly an octave below the viola. Played while seated, with the instrument's body between the knees and its endpin resting on the floor, it produces a rich, warm tone spanning tenor to bass registers. It is a cornerstone of orchestras and string quartets and is also widely played as a solo instrument, with a celebrated repertoire including works by Bach, Dvořák, and Elgar.
