10,470 Roles Closed Against 8,663 New Openings This Week

By Ben Garves

More roles came down than went up this week. Across the employer job boards Career App tracks, 8,663 roles opened in the last seven days and 10,470 closed, a gap of 1,807 in favor of closures. The job search currently holds 59,823 open listings from 678 employers.

This week across the boards we track

One mechanical detail before the rest: we see a closure when we next re-read an employer's board, so closures trail the actual takedown by roughly a week. New roles and closed roles are counted the same way, by role rather than by listing, so the two numbers compare directly.

New postings slipped about 8%

This week's 8,663 new roles compare with 9,456 the week before, a drop of 793. Over a longer window the slide is gentler: 40,251 new roles in the last 30 days against 41,066 in the 30 days before that, down 815, or about 2%. The comparison only counts boards we were already tracking, so adding a new employer board cannot inflate or deflate the change.

Remote work stayed a small slice. Four percent of new roles this week were remote.

California up, Texas and Massachusetts down

California posted the most new roles at 821, up from 785 a week earlier. Texas came second with 529, down from 611. Florida added 477 and New York 416, with New York off 43 week over week.

States with the most new roles this week

The sharpest percentage drop among the larger states was Massachusetts, down from 246 to 174. Washington went the other way, 132 to 174. Ohio fell to 247 from 293, Tennessee to 237 from 261, North Carolina to 207 from 234 and Illinois to 186 from 200. Georgia (193) and Colorado (188) each added a handful. Many other states posted openings this week; this is the list of the busiest ones, not a map of where every job is.

Hospital systems did the heaviest posting

AdventHealth put up 656 new roles, more than twice the next employer, and now shows 1,001 open listings. U.S. Bank followed with 387 new against 993 open, then Target at 279 and Tyson Foods at 264.

Employers posting the most new roles

Cleveland Clinic added 260 on top of a 902-listing board, and Lifepoint Hospitals 203. Three of the ten busiest posters are hospital operators. The rest of the group is spread across consulting at Accenture (237), banking at Citigroup (212), hotels at Marriott International (205) and convenience retail at Circle K (175). Together those ten accounted for 2,878 of the week's 8,663 new roles, about a third.

Two of them are posting close to their whole board: Marriott's 205 new roles sit against 257 open listings, and Circle K's 175 against 204. That is churn-heavy hiring, roles that go up and come down quickly.

Posted pay, by occupation

The figures below are pay ranges employers printed on their own listings, annualized to USD. Engineering Manager carries the highest posted median at $289,000 across 184 listings, with Machine Learning Engineer at $274,150 from a smaller set of 94.

Median posted pay by occupation

Software Engineer has the deepest sample by far, 989 listings, with a median of $245,800. Product Manager sits at $254,000 across 277 listings and Data Scientist at $250,000 across 87. On the other end, Sales Representative posts a median of $75,914 over 117 listings, roughly a third of Account Executive at $223,000. Mechanical Engineer ($192,000), Marketing Manager ($182,520) and Financial Analyst ($170,000) each rest on fewer than 110 listings, so read those as thin samples.

All 59,823 open listings are on the job search, filterable by state, employer and occupation. Day-by-day counts live on the US hiring trends page.

Correction, October 19, 2026: The pay medians in this post and its chart were calculated from the top of each posted pay range rather than its midpoint, which is the basis our occupation pages use. Midpoint medians are typically 10% to 17% lower than the figures shown here.
