Zither Banjo
The zither banjo is a hybrid instrument developed in Britain in the late 19th century that combines a banjo-style body and resonator with a shorter, zither-like fifth drone string recessed into the neck so it doesn't catch on the player's hand. It was especially popular in British parlor and banjo-mandolin-guitar (BMG) ensemble music in the early 20th century, prized for its brighter, quieter tone compared to open-back American banjos.
