Plectrum Banjo

The plectrum banjo is a four-string banjo, tuned differently from and lacking the short fifth drone string found on the five-string bluegrass banjo, and is played by strumming or picking with a flat pick (plectrum) rather than fingerpicks. It rose to prominence in early 20th-century American dance bands and Dixieland jazz, providing rhythmic chordal accompaniment. It remains a favorite among traditional jazz and vintage pop musicians for its bright, percussive strum.
