Alpine Zither (Harp Zither)

The Alpine zither, also known as a harp zither, is a plucked string instrument from the Alpine regions of Central Europe, typically featuring a shallow wooden soundbox with fretted melody strings over a fretboard and additional unfretted accompaniment strings. Players pluck the melody strings with a thumb pick while fingers of the other hand pluck chords on the open strings, producing the instrument's characteristic layered folk sound. It is strongly associated with Austrian, Bavarian, and Swiss folk music traditions.
