Sopranino Clarinet

The sopranino clarinet, also called the piccolo clarinet or Ab clarinet, is the smallest and highest-pitched clarinet in common use, pitched a minor third above the standard E-flat clarinet. It is primarily used in wind bands and orchestral works, notably in some Mahler symphonies, to add brilliant, piercing top-end color to the clarinet section. Its small size and demanding intonation make it a specialist instrument played mostly by clarinetists doubling from the standard B-flat clarinet.
