E♭ Clarinet
The E♭ clarinet is a smaller, higher-pitched member of the clarinet family, pitched a minor third above the standard B♭ clarinet, giving it a bright, piercing tone. It's used in orchestras and concert bands to add brilliance to the upper register, notably featured in works like Richard Strauss's tone poems and Shostakovich symphonies, as well as in traditional klezmer and military band music. Playing it well requires strong control given its smaller reed and more exposed, penetrating sound.
