D Clarinet

The D clarinet is a clarinet pitched a whole step above the standard B-flat clarinet, giving it a brighter, more piercing tone useful for cutting through a full orchestra. Composers such as Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky wrote parts for it, and it also appears in some Eastern European folk and klezmer traditions, though the E-flat clarinet has largely taken over its orchestral roles today.
