Esraj

The esraj is a bowed string instrument from the Indian subcontinent, combining features of the sitar (frets and sympathetic strings) with a bowed technique similar to the sarangi. It is used in Hindustani classical music and in accompaniment for vocal performances, particularly in Rabindra Sangeet (songs of Rabindranath Tagore). Its sustained, singing tone appeals to musicians seeking an instrument that closely mirrors the human voice.
