Descant

In music, a descant is a decorative melodic line, typically sung by higher voices, that soars above the main melody of a hymn or choral piece, often heard on the final verse. The term is also used for the soprano-range recorder (the descant or soprano recorder), commonly used in beginner music education. Choirs and musicians use descants to add brightness and a sense of climax to familiar tunes.
