Great Bass

Great bass is a term used in instrument families, especially early music, to denote the largest and lowest-pitched member of a family, such as the great bass recorder or great bass viol. These instruments produce very deep, low tones and are less common than their smaller counterparts due to their size and the breath or bow control required to play them. They are typically used in consort or ensemble settings to provide a rich foundation below the standard bass register.
