The C clarinet is a clarinet pitched in the key of C, meaning its written notes sound at concert pitch without transposition, unlike the more common B-flat or A clarinets. It was widely used in orchestras and bands in the 18th and early 19th centuries but gradually fell out of favor due to its brighter, sometimes shriller tone, though it still appears occasionally in specific orchestral scores and some folk music traditions, such as Klezmer.
