Calliope

The calliope is a musical instrument that produces sound by forcing steam or compressed air through large whistles, played from a keyboard much like an organ. Historically mounted on riverboats, carousels, and circus wagons, it became famous for its loud, piercing tone that could be heard for miles, announcing the arrival of a show or fair. As a hobby, calliope enthusiasts restore, maintain, and perform on vintage steam or air calliopes at fairs, museums, and antique machinery shows.
