Harpsichord

The harpsichord is a keyboard instrument, prominent from the 16th through 18th centuries, in which pressing a key triggers a mechanism that plucks a string with a small plectrum rather than striking it as a piano hammer does. This gives it a bright, precise tone but little dynamic variation regardless of how hard a key is pressed. It was central to Baroque music, used by composers like Bach and Handel for both solo works and continuo accompaniment, and remains popular today among early-music specialists and enthusiasts.
