Director of Sales Posted Median Falls to $196,750 — On Five Listings | Career App Daily

By Ben Garves

The posted median for Director of Sales roles across the boards we track was $196,750 over the last 30 days, down from $319,000 in the 30 days before that — a drop of $122,250, or 38.3%.

Now the caveat that has to come before anything else: each of those medians rests on five listings. Five in the last 30 days, five in the prior 30. That is not a pay trend. It is two small handfuls of job posts, and swapping one enterprise VP-adjacent req for one regional director req can move a five-listing median by six figures on its own.

All salary figures here are employer-posted ranges annualized to USD (hourly rates at 2,080 hours), taken from the postings themselves — not from what anyone told us they earn. Only a minority of postings carry a range at all, so these pools are always smaller than the hiring pools behind them.

Where $196,750 sits among sales titles

The occupations with enough ranges to produce a stable median give the number some shape. Across all listings with posted pay, Account Executive sits at $210,200 on 168 listings, Sales Manager at $175,000 on 120, and Sales Representative at $79,250 on 156.

So the last-30-day Director of Sales figure lands between Account Executive and Sales Manager — plausible for the title, but arrived at from a pool roughly one-thirtieth the size.

Every tracked occupation moved the same direction

The more useful signal isn't the size of the Director of Sales drop — it's that the drop is not unusual. All eight occupations with a 30-day-over-30-day posted-median move went down, and most went down harder than Director of Sales did.

Posted-median drop, last 30 days vs prior 30

When eight of eight move down by 30% to 59%, the likeliest explanation is composition, not compensation. New postings on tracked boards ran 52,338 over the last 30 days against 4,617 in the prior 30. The current window is drawing from a much larger and differently weighted set of postings than the comparison window, and a small salaried subset of that mix will shift accordingly. Read the direction as a change in what got posted, not as employers cutting director pay by a third.

What we can't say

We have no occupation-level hiring counts this week — the top-occupations list came back empty — so there's no companion volume figure for Director of Sales to check the pay move against. Openings overall stand at 56,955 across 687 employers and 12 states, with 9,964 new in the last seven days against 7,044 the week before.

If you're pricing a Director of Sales search, use the deeper sales medians as your anchor and treat the five-listing move as a footnote. More on method: how we crawl employer boards. Full list: Occupations index.
