Tabla

The tabla is a pair of hand drums central to Hindustani (North Indian) classical music, consisting of a smaller wooden treble drum (dayan) and a larger metal bass drum (bayan), each played with the fingers and palms to produce a wide range of pitched, resonant tones. Tabla players, called tabla players or tablists, provide rhythmic accompaniment to vocalists and instrumentalists or perform solo, using complex rhythmic cycles called taal. Learning tabla is popular among those interested in Indian classical music for its intricate finger technique and rhythmic vocabulary.
