Pipa

The pipa is a four-stringed, pear-shaped plucked lute that has been a central instrument in Chinese classical and folk music for over a thousand years. Players pluck the strings with fingerpicks or fingernails across frets on its fretted neck and body, producing techniques like rapid tremolo (lunzhi) and percussive slaps. It is used both as a solo virtuoso instrument and within traditional ensembles, and remains popular among musicians studying Chinese classical repertoire.
