Tenor Viola

A tenor viola is a larger-bodied viola built to produce a deeper, more resonant tone in the instrument's tenor range, sometimes made by luthiers experimenting with viola proportions like Lionel Tertis's enlarged model. Because standard violas are often built smaller than ideal for their tuning, tenor violas aim to give players fuller lower-register sound at the cost of being more physically demanding to play.
