Oud

The oud is a pear-shaped, fretless stringed instrument central to Middle Eastern, North African, and Turkish classical and folk music. Played with a plectrum (risha), it typically has 11 or 13 strings arranged in courses and produces a warm, resonant tone used for melodic improvisation (taqsim) and accompaniment. It is considered an ancestor of the European lute and is studied by musicians pursuing Arabic, Turkish, or Persian musical traditions.
