Ghatam
The ghatam is a percussion instrument from South India consisting of a large clay pot, played by striking it with the hands, fingers, thumbs, and palms, and sometimes manipulating the mouth of the pot against the player's bare stomach to alter resonance. It is a staple accompaniment instrument in Carnatic (South Indian classical) music, often performed alongside the mridangam in ensemble pieces and rhythm-focused percussion showcases called thani avartanam.
