Contrabass Trombone

The contrabass trombone is a large, low-pitched trombone pitched an octave below the tenor trombone, featuring a wide bore and often two rotary valves to make its long slide positions reachable. It is used in orchestral works requiring extreme low brass depth -- notably Wagner's Ring Cycle and Strauss tone poems -- as well as in film scoring and some brass ensembles. Its imposing size and demanding air support make it a specialist instrument played by low-brass experts.
