Calypso

Calypso is a genre of Afro-Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 20th century, characterized by syncopated rhythms and lyrics that often deliver witty, topical, or satirical social commentary. It grew out of West African call-and-response singing traditions among enslaved and colonial-era communities and became closely associated with Trinidad's Carnival celebrations. Fans and performers engage with it through calypso tents, competitions, and its influence on later genres like soca.
