Recorder

The recorder is a woodwind instrument with a whistle-like mouthpiece (fipple) and finger holes, played by blowing air through a duct that strikes an edge to produce sound. It comes in a family of sizes from sopranino to bass and was hugely popular in Renaissance and Baroque music before being largely supplanted by the transverse flute. It remains widely used today as a beginner instrument in schools and by early music and folk musicians.
