Lute

The lute is a plucked string instrument with a rounded, pear-shaped body, a fretted neck, and a distinctively bent-back pegbox, historically central to European art music from the medieval period through the Baroque era. Played by plucking or strumming the strings, often while seated, it was prized for accompanying song and for solo repertoire by composers such as John Dowland. Today it is played mainly by early-music specialists and enthusiasts of historically informed performance.
