Pianola

Pianola, originally a trademark, became a generic name for the player piano: a self-playing piano that uses a pneumatic or electro-mechanical mechanism to press the keys according to a perforated paper roll. Popular from the late 19th century through the 1920s, it let households without a trained pianist enjoy recorded performances of popular and classical music. Composers such as Conlon Nancarrow later used piano rolls creatively to compose music too rhythmically complex for human performers to play live.
