Field Recording

Field recording is the practice of capturing audio outside a recording studio, such as natural soundscapes, wildlife, urban ambiance, or musical performances, using portable microphones and recorders. It is used by sound designers, musicians, documentary makers, and nature enthusiasts to gather authentic sounds for use in film, music production, radio, or simply as an archival or meditative pursuit. Hobbyists are often drawn to it by an interest in acoustic ecology, travel, or the technical challenge of capturing clean audio in unpredictable environments.
