Octobass

The octobass is an enormous bowed string instrument, the largest member of the violin family, standing over 3 meters tall and requiring the player to use foot pedals and hand levers to stop the strings, since human fingers cannot reach across its fingerboard. Invented by French luthier Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume in the 1850s, it produces extremely low pitches and remains a rare novelty used by only a handful of orchestras worldwide.
