Lyre

The lyre is an ancient stringed instrument consisting of a hollow soundbox with two arms connected by a crossbar, from which strings are stretched and plucked by hand or with a plectrum. It originated in Mesopotamia and was central to music-making in ancient Greece, where it accompanied poetry, song, and myth, most famously associated with the god Apollo and the poet Orpheus. Modern players, including folk and classical musicians, revive it for historical performance and its distinctive resonant tone.
