Kenjutsu

Kenjutsu ("the art of the sword") refers to the classical Japanese martial arts of swordsmanship practiced by samurai using a real or wooden katana (bokken), predating the modern sport of kendo. Training traditionally emphasized paired forms (kata) teaching cutting techniques, footwork, and combative timing rather than free sparring. Various historical schools (ryu) of kenjutsu are still preserved and taught today as traditional martial arts (koryu) focused on technique and swordsmanship heritage rather than competition.
