Renaissance Trombone

The Renaissance trombone, also known as the sackbut, is an early ancestor of the modern trombone used in European music from roughly the 15th to 17th centuries, featuring a narrower bore, smaller bell, and softer, blended tone suited to consort and church music. It uses the same slide mechanism as its modern descendant but produces a gentler, more vocal-like sound. It is played today primarily by early music specialists and historically informed performance ensembles seeking authentic period sound.
