Contrabassoon/Double Bassoon
The contrabassoon, or double bassoon, is a large double-reed woodwind pitched an octave below the standard bassoon, producing some of the lowest notes heard in the orchestra. It is a fixture of symphonic and wind ensemble repertoire, prized for the depth and gravity it lends to bass lines in works by composers such as Stravinsky, Ravel, and Wagner. Because it requires substantial breath control and reed skill, it is typically taken up by advanced bassoonists specializing in orchestral playing.
