Contra-Alto Flute

The contra-alto flute is a rare, large low-register flute pitched a fourth below the bass flute, with looped metal tubing to make its considerable length manageable to play. Its deep, breathy tone is used mainly in flute choirs and contemporary classical compositions seeking extended low-register color. Because of its size, cost, and specialized repertoire, it is played by relatively few dedicated flutists, often within flute ensemble communities.
