Clarinette D'Amour

The clarinette d'amour ("love clarinet") is a rare, larger relative of the standard clarinet, pitched lower and typically featuring a distinctive bulb- or pear-shaped bell, popular briefly in the 18th century. It produces a softer, mellower tone than the standard clarinet, in keeping with other "d'amore" family instruments like the oboe d'amore. Today it is mostly of interest to historical instrument specialists and early-music performers who play period repertoire on original or reconstructed instruments.
