Zither

The zither is a stringed instrument consisting of a flat, often wooden soundbox strung with numerous strings that are plucked or strummed, without a separate neck like a guitar or violin. It is especially associated with Alpine folk music in Austria, Bavaria, and Switzerland, where the concert zither is used to play melody on fretted strings while accompanying strings provide harmony.
