Pennsylvania Posted 223 New Roles This Week, Down 11% While Tracked National Postings Rose 18%

By Ben Garves

Pennsylvania went the other way this week. Across the employer job boards we track, 223 roles opened in the state over the last seven days, down from 251 the week before, a drop of 28 postings, or 11%. The same week nationally moved up: 10,220 new roles across all tracked boards versus 8,653 the prior week, up 18%.

That gap is the story. Pennsylvania didn't just grow more slowly than the rest of the board; it shrank while nearly everything else expanded.

Pennsylvania vs. the tracked national week

Where Pennsylvania sits among the states

Pennsylvania ranks 11th among all states for new roles on the boards we track this week. Among the 12 states with the most new roles, it is one of only two where new postings fell: Illinois (235, down from 245) and Pennsylvania (223, down from 251). The other ten all added volume, several of them sharply: Tennessee jumped from 157 to 300, California added 352 postings to reach 1,038, Ohio went from 251 to 351, and Minnesota climbed from 171 to 221.

New roles opened this week by state

One way to see the squeeze: Pennsylvania accounted for 2.9% of all new postings across our tracked boards last week. This week it accounted for 2.2%. The state's own count fell and the denominator grew at the same time.

What's behind the national surge

The employers driving this week's national jump are concentrated in health systems, retail, and food production. AdventHealth opened 559 roles this week and now has 991 open. Ranger Boats added 399, Cleveland Clinic 320, Citigroup 313, and Meijer 299. Rounding out the top ten: Tyson Foods (238), Target (228), Lifepoint Hospitals (216), JLL (211), and Longs Drugs (207).

Employers with the most new postings this week

These are national counts across every board we crawl, not Pennsylvania-specific tallies. But they explain the shape of the week: when a handful of large multi-site employers push several hundred requisitions at once, the states where their facilities cluster move first. Pennsylvania wasn't among them this round.

The longer view

A single week is a small window, and 28 postings is a small absolute number.

The broader snapshot as of today: 58,664 open listings, 682 employers hiring, and 9,743 roles closed in the last seven days, slightly fewer than the 10,220 that opened. Remote roles made up 5% of everything new this week.

For job seekers in Pennsylvania, the practical read is that supply of fresh postings tightened this week rather than expanded, and the biggest hiring pushes on our boards landed elsewhere. If you're tracking a specific employer, the open-total figures matter more than the weekly deltas — AdventHealth, Cleveland Clinic, and Target each carry several hundred live listings regardless of what any given week adds.

You can follow the state's count day by day on the Pennsylvania jobs page, or see how the whole board is moving on US hiring trends, day by day.

All counts here describe the employer job boards Career App crawls plus roles posted directly on the site. They are not a measure of the whole labor market. Week-over-week comparisons exclude boards added after the comparison period began, so onboarding a new employer never reads as a hiring boom.

Correction, October 11, 2026: An earlier version of this post counted every closed listing rather than closed roles, and compared each week with the one before using only roles still open, which overstated closures and growth. The figures above have been recomputed, and comparisons the data cannot yet support have been removed.
