Pennsylvania Opened 194 New Roles This Week, Down 7% While the Overall Count Rose 8%

By Ben Garves

Pennsylvania employers opened 194 new roles this week across the job boards Career App tracks, down from 209 the week before. That is a drop of 15 roles, or 7.2%, in a week when the overall count of new roles moved the other way: 9,348 this week against 8,654 the week before, a gain of 8.0%.

Pennsylvania against the overall week

So Pennsylvania did not take part in the week's increase. It was not alone. Of the twelve states with the most new roles this week, eight posted fewer than they did the prior week, which means the growth in the overall figure came from outside the biggest state counts.

Where Pennsylvania sits against the other large state counts

Jobs in Pennsylvania sat in a tight cluster at the bottom of this week's top twelve. Massachusetts logged 196 new roles, North Carolina 199 and Colorado 200. Fifteen roles separate the four of them, so small swings reshuffle that group from week to week.

New roles this week, top twelve state counts

On the change itself, Pennsylvania's 7.2% decline was close to the middle of the pack:

Pennsylvania's slide is milder than Illinois (down 54 roles), New York (down 81) or North Carolina (down 43), and steeper than Ohio or Texas. California lost the most roles outright, 70, though on a much larger base.

The employers driving this week's volume

Our state counts do not break out by employer or occupation, so the names here describe the week across every board we track rather than Pennsylvania on its own. AdventHealth led with 611 new roles and 978 open listings. Target followed with 330 new roles against 808 open, then Accenture at 328 new and 778 open, Ranger Boats at 296, and Meijer at 272.

Below that: Citigroup 233, Tyson Foods 226, Cleveland Clinic 225 new roles against 887 open, JLL 214, and Marriott International 203. Health systems, big-box retail and consulting account for most of the top of that list.

Two things to keep in mind on the numbers

New and closed counts measure roles, not listings, so copies of the same job on one employer board count once. Closures run behind the employer actually taking a job down by roughly a week, because we only see a role leave when we next re-read the board. This week, 11,386 roles closed against 9,348 opened, leaving 59,799 open listings from 679 employers hiring.

The week-over-week comparison counts only boards we were already tracking before the comparison began, so adding a new board cannot inflate the change. Remote roles made up 5% of everything new this week.
