Timpani

Timpani, or kettledrums, are large percussion instruments consisting of a hemispherical copper or fiberglass shell with a stretched membrane head that can be tuned to specific pitches using a foot pedal or tension screws. A staple of orchestras and concert bands, timpani are played with mallets to provide rhythmic emphasis, dramatic rolls, and harmonic bass support, and require considerable skill to tune accurately during performance.
