Maculelê

Maculelê is an Afro-Brazilian folk dance and martial art performed with wooden sticks (or sometimes machetes) that dancers rhythmically strike together while dancing in a circle to drumming and call-and-response singing. Originating among enslaved Africans and their descendants in Bahia, Brazil, it is closely associated with capoeira circles and is often performed alongside them. Practitioners are drawn to its energetic rhythm, cultural heritage, and the skill required to strike sticks accurately in time with the music.
