Glass Harmonica

The glass harmonica (or glass armonica) is a musical instrument made of a series of graduated glass bowls mounted on a rotating spindle, played by touching wetted fingers to the rims to produce sustained tones, similar to rubbing a wine glass. It was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761 and was popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries, with composers including Mozart and Beethoven writing for it. Its ethereal, bell-like sound still attracts a small community of specialist performers and instrument makers today.
