German School of Fencing
The German school of fencing refers to a historical European martial arts tradition (Kunst des Fechtens, or "Art of Fighting") that developed in the Holy Roman Empire from the 14th century onward, centered on use of the longsword as well as other weapons like the dagger and messer. It is associated with masters such as Johannes Liechtenauer, whose teachings were preserved and expanded in fencing manuals (fechtbücher) by later masters. Today it is studied and practiced by historical European martial arts (HEMA) enthusiasts who reconstruct these techniques from surviving manuscripts.
