Academic Fencing

Academic fencing, known as Mensur in Germany and Austria, is a traditional dueling practice among members of student fraternities (Studentenverbindungen) in which two participants exchange strictly regulated sword strokes with sharp blades while standing nearly still, wearing protective gear except on the face. Unlike sport fencing, the goal is not to avoid being hit but to demonstrate courage and composure, and facial scars from the practice have historically been worn as marks of honor.
