Fischer Random Chess

Also known as Chess960, a chess variant invented by former world champion Bobby Fischer in which the starting positions of the back-rank pieces are randomized (from 960 possible setups) while keeping pawns in place and preserving castling rules. It was designed to reduce the value of memorized opening theory and encourage creative, over-the-board thinking. The variant has gained mainstream traction, including official World Chess Championship events.
