Courier Chess

Courier chess is a historical chess variant that was popular in Germany from the 12th through the 19th centuries, played on an elongated board (typically 12x8 squares) with additional piece types beyond standard chess, such as the courier (a long-range diagonal piece resembling the modern bishop) and other extra pieces like the fool or man. It is considered one of the important precursors in the historical development of the modern bishop and queen moves in chess. Today it is played mainly by chess history enthusiasts interested in reconstructing and studying historical chess variants.
