Alto Trombone

The alto trombone is a smaller, higher-pitched trombone, traditionally in E-flat, that predates the more common tenor trombone in orchestral use and was favored by composers like Mozart and Beethoven for upper trombone parts. Its smaller slide and bore give it a brighter, lighter tone well-suited to high passages that would be strained on a tenor trombone. It has seen a revival among orchestral trombonists specializing in Classical and early Romantic repertoire.
